Trial resumes in murder of Maine ex-fiancee

The Associated Press

ALFRED, Maine — The trial of a New Hampshire man accused of killing his ex-fiancee in Maine is entering its second week in York County Superior Court.

Testimony resumes Monday in the trial of Jason Twardus of Rochester, N.H., who prosecutors say strangled nursing student Kelly Gorham of Alfred, and buried her body on his father’s property in northern New Hampshire. Her body was found three weeks after her disappearance in 2007.

The defense has suggested that the victim’s landlord or another man who struck up a romance with the victim the week before she disappeared could have committed the crime.

Jurors heard a tape of a police interview on Friday. On it, Twardus told police that Gerhard “was the sweetest girl” and he questioned why anyone would want to hurt her.
