NEW LIMERICK, Maine — A 22-year-old Linneus man is listed in critical condition at a Bangor hospital for injuries he suffered in one of two motor vehicle crashes Sunday evening that police say were caused by the same moose.

Nathaniel Cady, 22, initially was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital after the accident, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. on Route 2, according to Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department.

Cady, who suffered serious head injuries, later was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

According to Dudley, Cady was injured in the second accident Sunday evening involving a large bull moose. The first accident involved a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Eric Carr, 59, of Island Falls.

Carr, who was not injured, was driving west on Route 2 when the moose entered the roadway in his path. Carr reportedly was unable to avoid a collision. After it was struck by Carr, the moose crossed into the eastbound lane, where Cady struck it with his 2000 Toyota Corolla.

After striking the moose, Cady’s car ran off the road, down an embankment and struck a tree. Cady had to be extricated from the vehicle by Houlton fire and rescue personnel.

Cady’s two young children were in the car when the accident happened, Dudley said. The children were taken to Houlton Regional Hospital for examination. They were not injured and later left the hospital.

The accident involving Carr is under investigation by Aroostook County Deputy Eric Crouse. The accident involving Caddy is being investigated by Deputy Ross McQuade, also of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department. The Maine State Police assisted at the scene.

Both vehicles involved in the accidents were demolished, Dudley said.
