Maine business on governor’s mind

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci says efforts are under way on several fronts to develop business activity and help bring Maine out of the recession.

In his weekly radio address, the governor says national indicators show the economy is still in a precarious position. He says people’s confidence is still lagging, so it’s a long road to recovery.

But Baldacci says the state’s helping to pave the road in a number of ways. It’s trying to develop traditional industries and groundbreaking technologies such as ocean renewable energy. Also, the state’s expanded the Pine Tree Economic Development Zone program which offers tax incentives to expanding businesses.

Baldacci says the state is partnering with the Maine State Chamber of Commerce on an initiative that enables Maine students to see opportunities in Maine once they graduate.
