BELFAST, Maine — Police say they have solved the months-long mystery of wine disappearing from local convenience stores after Friday’s summons of a Belfast woman on theft charges.

Maureen Klein, 63, stole two bottles of wine from the Circle K convenience store on Thursday, according to police reports.

Klein was caught in the act on video, but police initially were unable to identify her, said Detective Bryan Cunningham from the Belfast Police Department.

“Today she came in to steal some more and got caught,” he said.

After identifying Klein, police said that they were able to connect her with previous wine thefts, including a theft from Belfast Variety in June.

Klein has been charged with three counts of theft and likely will face a fourth theft charge, Officer Mike Rolerson said.

The woman reportedly told police she thought she had taken about eight bottles from the Circle K just since Sept. 9.

“They just started carrying this wine and noticing it was missing,” he said.
