BANGOR, Maine — Six months after it announced 40 job openings, the Verizon Wireless Customer Call Center in Bangor is looking for about 20 more full-time customer service representatives.

The call center on Telecom Drive near Bangor International Airport is the only Verizon facility in northern New England.

The added positions are needed to accommodate a growing customer base, according to Jennifer Bouquot, a human resources manager for Verizon. Customer service representatives take inbound calls from customers and answer questions about bills, features and benefits of their phones and provide some troubleshooting help.

Verizon Wireless acquired the Bangor call center when it bought a smaller telecom company, Unicel, in 2008. Initially, about 100 customer service representatives were hired and trained, and Verizon has been adding positions steadily since.

“Bangor has developed a great reputation,” Bouquot said.

Any new hires would spend their first 19 weeks training, but their pay (about $27,000 annually) and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), phone discounts, tuition assistance, etc.) would start immediately. At least one year of customer service experience is required and a college degree is preferred.

Verizon has been recruiting new employees for some time and will continue to reach out to potential workers through career fairs and other venues. Including the 20 new vacancies, the Bangor call center now has a total of about 160 positions.
