It was one of the most beautiful days of summer — perfect weather for an invasion. Under absolutely blue skies, the pirates of Eastport once again traveled by land and sea to invade Lubec on Sunday.
The first wave of invaders was made up of the dozens of pirates on motorcycles, followed by a flotilla of ships carrying a couple hundred pirates. The resistance was fierce and fun with almost 2,000 spectators cheering on the antics.
The full day of festivities included a parade through town, a pirate bed race, The Taste of Lubec and a tug of war between Eastport’s pirates and the people and pirates of Lubec.
Lubec won the tug of war. A rematch is scheduled for next week. Lubec and Eastport were one community 199 years ago and split over an argument no one can remember.
“Each year, we invade the shores of our neighbors in Lubec,” says Pirate Festival creator John Miller. “This year, they took it up a notch and organized an incredible minipirate festival that had a tremendous turnout. Great events, great food and pure Down East Hospitality.”
The event was all in fun and marks the official kickoff of the annual Eastport Pirate Festival, which happens Sept. 10-12. More than 10,000 pirates of all ages are expected for the Eastport Pirate Festival.
