LEWISTON, Maine — Olympic bronze medalist and Tour de France veteran Levi Leipheimer is coming to Maine to take part in the second annual Dempsey Challenge bicycling fundraiser put on by “Grey’s Anatomy” star and Maine native Patrick Dempsey.

Dempsey Challenge ’09 A grueling, moving 50-mile experience
A lot of tears were shed over the 100 miles of the Dempsey Challenge and I’m not ashamed to admit some of them were mine.

Leipheimer joins five-time Olympian George Hincapie and this year’s top U.S. Tour de France finisher, Chris Horner, as among the participants in the Dempsey Challenge.

Dempsey, who is from Buckfield, launched the first event last year with a bike ride ride to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

This year’s event has been expanded to two days, with walking and running events on Oct. 2 and bicycle rides through central Maine between 10 and 100 miles set for Oct. 3.
