Were school superintendents wise to close schools because of the heat wave?

Several school superintendents curtailed classes, closing schools a couple of hours early last week in deference to the heat wave. Was this wise? What were the risks in keeping children in school? Will these superintendents regret those decisions? Should school

begin after Labor Day, was traditionally the case?
