GU Energy Gel. Give to Jeff Strout for Toolbox/Outdoors.

Sure, they’re small (1.1oz to be exact), but GU’s Energy Gel really packs a punch.

These little packets aren’t just for the marathon runner anymore. Now everyone from hikers to boaters to team sport players are getting in on this game, and for good reason. One could get pretty technical about the chemistry behind how this gel works, but to put it simply and in GU’S own words, the idea is to “Energize, Sustain and Recover” your body before, during and after your activity.

It’s pretty easy to follow the recommended directions printed right on the packet, too — a bonus for those of us who don’t like fussy instructions. Just eat one gel 15 minutes before you head off on you adventure and then follow up with another packet every 45 minutes — being sure to hydrate along the way. If you’re doing the math in your head, that’s 3 packets for your 90-minute trek-bike-run-game. And guess what? You can go on 3 separate jaunts without having to duplicate a flavor. Does it get better than that?

GU has 10 flavors; for example: Mandarin Orange, Jet Blackberry, Vanilla Bean, and Chocolate Outrage — my personal favorite. You can even choose if you want your gel to have caffeine, no caffeine or 2X caffeine.

The fall race circuit and leaf peeping hikes are just around the corner. Don’t get caught zonking out. Throw a couple of these puppies in your pocket or bag and you’ll be set.

Price: $1.19 each
