AUGUSTA, Maine — A Monmouth man has pleaded guilty to murder during his trial for the stabbing death of his mother last year.

Kenneth McDonald entered his plea Wednesday, abruptly ending his jury trial in its third day in Kennebec County Superior Court. The 44-year-old McDonald was on trial for killing 80-year-old Janice McDonald on Aug. 24, 2009, in the home the two shared.

The Kennebec Journal in Augusta reports that McDonald pleaded guilty to intentional or knowing or depraved indifference murder. He faces a minimum 25 years in prison.

McDonald had previously pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. His attorney told the jury in his opening statement that McDonald killed his mother, but the charge should be manslaughter.
