PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Turnpike says Labor Day holiday traffic could be lighter than last year’s from the late timing of the holiday and all of the hurricane talk.

But officials for the toll highway still predict heavy traffic during the symbolic last weekend of the summer season.

Turnpike Authority spokesman Dan Paradee says that with many New England schools opening before Labor Day, record-breaking traffic volumes over this holiday weekend aren’t as likely. This year, Labor Day occurs six full days into September.

Weather forecasts that continue to mention hurricane activity in the Atlantic also could keep traffic levels down.

On Monday, the turnpike is giving away refrigerator magnets showing Maine attractions and activities.
