AUGUSTA, Maine — The heat wave in northern New England is bringing air pollution with it.

Maine environmental officials say air quality over the next several days is expected to be the worst it has been in several years.

Ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to reach unhealthy levels along the coast starting Wednesday and into Thursday before moving inland. An air quality alert also has been issued for Wednesday in New Hampshire’s Rockingham County.

In these conditions people suffering from respiratory disease such as asthma and children and healthy adults who exert themselves can experience shortness of breath, coughing and throat irritation.

Officials are advising people to avoid strenuous activity and close windows.
