BANGOR, Maine — Detectives with the Bangor Police Department are seeking the public’s help with their investigation into the apparent beating of a 47-year-old man.

The man, whose name and hometown were withheld in a news release issued Tuesday, was found about 1:25 a.m. Sunday unconscious under the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge off Union Street.

Bangor Fire Department emergency medical personnel took the man to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized late Tuesday afternoon. Further information about the man’s medical condition and the extent of his injuries was not immediately available.

According to Bangor police Lt. Tim Reid, the preliminary investigation indicates the man was involved in an altercation on the street.

Police believe that a large number of people were in the vicinity of the bridge and lower Union Street and may have witnessed the altercation, which occurred a few hours after Saturday’s American Folk Festival activities wound down for the night and shortly after nearby bars closed.

The incident is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Bangor Police Department.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Police Department tip line at 947-7382, ext. 6.
