Moulton banned for life from Speedway 95

    HERMON — Saturday night’s racing at Speedway 95 was marred by an incident and an angry outburst that saw Holden’s Steve Moulton banned for life by track co-owner Del Merritt.

Moulton and rival Jeremy Glasier of Appleton tangled on lap 22 of a 25-lap Super Street race and Moulton had a tire go flat when Glasier moved up the track and clipped Moulton’s left front tire.

Moulton got out of his car on the front stretch to give Glasier and flagman Aaron Jordan a piece of his mind and then, on the cool-down lap after the race, he pulled up alongside Glasier to again voice his displeasure.

Moulton said, “I led the race for 21 laps and [Glasier] took me out and didn’t get punished for it. They should have put him to the back. They could have put both of us to the back. At least that way I would have known they were watching the race.”

Moulton, who had to re-start seventh because he caused the caution and went to the pits to change his flat tire, made his way up to fourth over the final three laps but was disqualified after the race.

According to race director Steve Watson, Moulton had been banned for the season earlier this year after deliberately spinning Glasier out, making an obscene gesture to the crowd and not leaving the pit area after the race, requiring track officials to call the police.

But Merritt rescinded the ban after five weeks after having a long talk with Moulton.

“[Moulton] can race anywhere he wants but he isn’t going to race here as long as I own this track,” Merritt said Sunday. “I gave him a break and he didn’t want to take advantage of it so he can race somewhere else.”

Moulton said the early-season incident was a retaliation on his behalf after Glasier had bumped him.

Moulton was surprised when he learned of the ban Sunday night and said he feels he has been unfairly targeted by track officials,

“I’ve seen other guys do a lot worse things and not get kicked out,” said Moulton. “I’m a hothead, but a lot of guys are.”

Moulton said he doesn’t have a problem being suspended for the rest of the season but he shouldn’t be suspended for life. He hopes Merritt and co-owner Alice Baker give him another chance next season. He said it is an important source of family entertainment as his three children love going to the races.

Glasier said Moulton, “hasn’t liked me from day one.

“We had a good race going. I passed him the way he passed me in the first half of the race. He came into me hard and I backed out. When it was my turn, he chose not to back out.

“Neither one of us was going to give the other any room. Steve’s a good, hard racer. If you can even run with him, you’ve got something. If you can beat him, you’re having a good night,” said Glasier, who won the race by eight car-lengths over Artie Maguire Jr. of Bucksport.

Moulton said Glasier hates losing to him but he has respect for Glasier as Glasier has for him.

“It’s a rivalry. Why wouldn’t the track want a rivalry? It brings people to the track,” said Moulton.

Moulton’s car bumped into Maguire’s car on the postrace lap as he made his way up to Glasier’s car.

“I was the unfortunate recipient [of the aftermath of the confrontation]. Steve ran down the side of me and [flattened] a perfectly good tire of mine,” said Maguire.

Maguire also said he thought “I could get a win out of the hard racing between those two guys but, unfortunately, my car started running bad.”

Mike Overlock of Franklin was third with Liberty’s Ryan St. Clair and Franklin’s Greg Pung rounding out the top five.
