A fast moving blaze destroyed two buildings Monday afternoon on Dwelley Road in East Machias, part of a complex of buildings that housed blueberry equipment and construction tools.
The building’s owner, Kevin Look, said a nearby house was saved when a neighbor used a garden hose to cool off the siding while waiting for firefighters to arrive.
The buildings were the former Gary’s Auto Center but Look said they were now used for storage. A pickup truck, a blueberry tractor and harvester and a blueberry sprayer, as well as carpentry and construction equipment were destroyed and both buildings were a total loss.
Look said family members Jeremy and Crystal Look resided in the home, which was undamaged.
Firefighters from East Machias, Machias and Marshfield as well as members of the Maine Forest Service responded to the blaze.
“I was in Machias when I saw the smoke,” a distraught Look said. “Then a friend called me and said it was my buildings. All my tools are in there. I sure don’t need this.”
Look said the electricity had been turned off to the buildings and he had no idea what caused the fire.
