SEARSPORT, Maine — A local man accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl four years ago was arrested Thursday by a Waldo County Sheriff Office detective.

Terry Cook, Jr., 36, was charged with gross sexual assault, a Class B felony offense. He was taken to Waldo County Jail and then released on $500 cash bail, according to Sheriff Scott Story.

Cook’s bail conditions include no contact with anybody under age 18 and no possession of weapons.

“The incident just recently came to light,” Story said.

The victim of the alleged crime — which reportedly took place in December 2006 — is still a minor, the sheriff said. Detective Merl Reed started his investigation after receiving a referral from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Cook is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 28.

If convicted for the Class B charge, Cook could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
