U.S. education secretary to visit Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — The nation’s top education official is paying a visit to Maine.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is scheduled to visit King Middle School in Portland next Tuesday for the final stop of his back-to-school bus tour to schools in eight states.

Portland school officials say Duncan will talk with teachers about how they are helping their students achieve and how the federal government can best support educators.

The tour kicks off Thursday in the South, with stops in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The northeastern leg begins Monday with stops in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
