AUBURN, Maine — A trial is under way for a Maine man who allegedly rammed two police cars with his dump truck and chased a third before he was shot in the hip by an Auburn police officer and arrested.

Bartolo Ford, 49, of Lisbon is on trial in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn for aggravated attempted murder and five other felony charges in the September 2008 incident.

A chase began after Ford allegedly stole concrete cylinders from a business and was confronted by police. During a chase that sometimes reached 80 mph hour, two police cars were rammed, one of them head-on.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says Ford’s lawyer told the jury that Ford’s experience in the Gulf War and mental illness contributed to his actions.
