GRAY, Maine — The National Weather Service says a new rainfall record has been set in Portland.
The city had received 2.37 inches of rain for the day by late Wednesday afternoon, breaking the old record for the date of 2.02 inches, set in 1901. It was the first time since July 14 that the city had gotten more than 1 inch of rain in a single day.
Wednesday’s rains were welcome after weeks of little rain across Maine.
The wettest spot for the day was Wells, which meteorologist Tom Hawley said had received 3.79 inches by late afternoon.
