MILO, Maine — A bright and welcoming playground that replaces an aging wooden facility at Milo Elementary School was dedicated Monday as the Clayton Johndro Memorial Playground.
The playground is the culmination of several years of planning, fundraising and grant writing by a dedicated group of local people steered by Parent-Teacher Organization members Karen Graham, Tiffany Sanborn, Theresa McMannus, Bonnie Herbest, Sheila Kuchinski, Cindy Davis and Cathy Knox.
Taking the project to its completion was the Johndro family, who wanted to memorialize the late Clayton Johndro by contributing $20,000 for the expansion of the playground and playing field.
In addition to the Johndro family, the PTO was successful in obtaining several large grants, including a Lowe’s Toolbox Grant of $5,000, which meant that the grounds would have amenities such as picnic tables, sturdy trash bins and eventually a small storage shed for the playing field equipment, fencing and soccer goals; a Wal-Mart donation, which was used to rent augers and purchase concrete and wood chips; and a $10,000 William and Joan Alfond Foundation grant.
Businesses in the region were also extremely helpful in donating labor and materials, according to PTO members.
