Bangor all-sports radio station WZON (620 AM) and Husson University in Bangor have announced a broadcast agreement for the 2010-2011 academic year.

The Sports Zone will broadcast live coverage on the radio and on the station’s website (zoneradio.com) of at least 20 regular-season and six postseason games involving Husson football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

The deal also calls for weekly coaches’ shows such as a segment with Husson football coach Niles Nelson each Thursday at 8:15 a.m.

“For us to be affiliated with the station that does the Celtics and the Red Sox is the kind of station we want to be on,” said Husson athletic director Bob Reasso. “They’re really the voice of Bangor-area sports.”

Husson and WZON agreed to a 30-game-minimum broadcast contract in 2007.

The new agreement also will provide for a series of 60-second segments — “Husson Minute” or “Husson Report” — which will provide information about what’s happening on the Bangor campus.

“We are extremely excited to have our affiliation with WZON sports radio once again,” Reasso said. “Our WZON partnership will enable us to let the community know what is happening at Husson University academically, culturally and athletically.”

Husson golf outing set Monday

Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono will be the site Monday for the first Husson Eagles Golf Outing.

The event, sponsored by Tricia Quirk Hampden Home Builders, will bring together Husson University coaches, staff members and alumni with area fans and supporters.

Registration for the event is scheduled from 1-1:45 p.m., with a 2 p.m. shotgun start to follow. The tournament will be capped with a 6:30 Texas barbecue dinner and 7 p.m. awards program.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Husson’s general athletic fund.

Reasso said Husson has received an excellent response from local businesses and supporters.

“We’re very lucky, it looks like we’re going to sell the golf outing out,” Reasso said.

“It’s the first of what will be an annual event for Husson athletics.”
