ALFRED, Maine — Officials say a 44-year-old Maine man is going to jail for nine months after pleading guilty to felony aggravated cruelty of animals.

Buxton Police Chief Michael Grovo said Bruce Simpson was charged in January 2009 in a case that left a Papillon toy dog blind.

Grovo said Simpson was sentenced Monday to spend nine months in jail and pay more than $4,000 in restitution and fines. He was also banned from ever owning animals again.

Police say the dog is now doing well living with a couple in Maine.
