How should prescription drug abuse be tackled?

A recent BDN story chronicled the rampant abuse of prescription drugs in Maine, and especially in Washington County. How can this problem be effectively addressed?

Is society’s reliance on such drugs – mostly painkillers – partly to blame? Are Americans too quick to turn to a pill to solve their problems? Are physicians too quick to write prescriptions for such pills?

Or does the fault lie with those who would commit criminal acts to obtain these drugs? Will those who legitimately need painkillers suffer with less

access to the pills if laws crack down too hard on the availability of these drugs?
