Man unhurt after car hits Hampden flagpole

HAMPDEN, Maine — A Winterport man escaped injury Friday afternoon when his car struck a metal flagpole in the Edwards Family Shop ’n Save Parking lot off Western Avenue.

“He was pulling into a parking space about 2:30 p.m. when he either confused the gas and brake pedals or his foot slipped off the brakes,” Hampden police Officer Shawn Devine said.

The man’s car — which Devine said was a large four-door Mercury sedan — then drove up on a curb, brushed up against another car and struck the flagpole, knocking it down, Devine said.

Though no one was hurt and damage to the vehicles was not extensive, Devine said the outcome could have been worse if the pole landed on anyone or anything.
