Baranowski FT defeats Quebec

    MONTREAL — Junior forward Samantha Baranowski made one of two free throws with 10 seconds remaining Wednesday night, lifting the University of Maine women’s basketball team a 74-73 victory over the University of Quebec at Montreal in the first game of the Black Bears’ preseason Canadian exhibition tour.

Coach Cindy Blodgett’s team survived a late rally by the Citadins, who trailed by 10 points with 6:30 remaining but tied the contest with 1:09 to play.

UMaine, which plays Friday night at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, outscored UQAM 29-18 in the second quarter to build a 47-40 halftime edge.

Freshman guard Ashleigh Roberts had a productive debut for the Bears, scoring 17 points and providing seven rebounds and seven assists. She went 7-for-8 from the foul line.

Baranowski finished with 17 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Samantha Wheeler contributed 15 points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Junior Sheay Longstaff tallied 11 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Katelyn Vanderhoff added eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for UMaine, which shot 42 percent from the field, including 59 percent (20-for-34) in the first half.

The Bears limited the Citadins to 34 percent floor shooting. UQAM was paced by Karine Boudrias (18 points), Emie Simard (16 points) and Michelle A-Bellemare (14 points).

UMaine trailed by six late in the first quarter, but put together a key 8-0 run in the second quarter. Baranowski scored two baskets while Vanderhoff and Wheeler added one each as the Bears took a 37-28 lead with 6:03 left in the first half.

UMaine would not trail after that, although the Citadins tied the game on two occasions.

The Bears committed 25 turnovers, while UQAM had 23.
