DEER ISLE, Maine — Firefighters from Deer Isle and several nearby towns were called to Church Street late Monday afternoon to fight a house fire.

The fire was reported about 4 p.m., a Hancock County emergency dispatcher said Monday night. He said firefighters from Deer Isle, Stonington, Sedgwick and Brooklin fought the fire while Brooksville firefighters provided backup coverage for the other towns.

The dispatcher also said traffic temporarily was detoured around the fire, which was near the intersection of Route 15 and Route 15A.

Firefighter John Weed said that two children who were at home at the time called 911 to report the blaze and that both escaped safely.

Fire crews were still at the scene at 10 p.m., Weed said.
