BRISTOL, Conn. — Tommy Ryan hit the only home run in the third inning and Connecticut has beaten Rhode Island 1-0 to earn a spot in the Little League World Series.
The Connecticut team, Fairfield American, advances to play the champions of the Northwest in the opening game on Friday in Williamsport, Pa.
Connecticut’s Nick Nardone held the Rhode Island team, Cumberland National, to just one hit in 5 2/3 innings while striking out nine on Saturday. Nardone was lifted from the game with the bases loaded in the sixth after surpassing Little League Baseball 85-pitch limit.
Ryan’s home run was his second of the tournament and one of just four hits Connecticut managed off Rhode Island’s Tyler Calabro, who fanned 10 batters in a complete-game effort.
Eddie Magi struck out the only batter he faced to secure Connecticut the victory.
