BELFAST, Maine — For the third year in a row, Waldo County gardeners are being encouraged to donate surplus crops to the hungry, according to Master Gardener Nan Cobbey of Belfast.
“There are so many people here who need it,” said Cobbey, who is organizing the endeavor as her Master Gardener project for Waldo County. “There are hundreds of gardeners now in the county, and we all end up with extra.”
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension has provided a monthly guide to food pantries and soup kitchens with the days that the organizations can best accept deliveries of produce.
The first week of any month, the Searsport Congregational-Methodist Church at 43 East Main St. will accept deliveries at 9 a.m. Saturday, or on Thursday or Friday if arranged in advance. Contact: Joyce Harvey 548-6204
The second week, the Little River Baptist Church at 259 Northport Ave in Belfast will accept deliveries from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Contact: Herman Miller at 589-4557.

Every week, the Belfast Soup Kitchen at 9 Field St. in Belfast will accept deliveries 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.
