NORTHPORT, Maine — An Appleton man was injured when the 1998 Subaru Legacy he was driving south on U.S. Route 1 rolled over

After he was extricated from his vehicle by Northport firefighters, Conor Alexander, 24, was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, state police Trooper Corey Smith said Friday night.

Smith said Alexander complained of pain at the accident scene but did not appear to have serious injuries.

“All of our evidence and witness statements seem to indicate that he fell asleep,” he said.

Smith said that Alexander apparently crossed the oncoming travel lane and left the roadway, striking a dirt embankment, which sent his car airborne and caused it to spin around. Based on the extent of damage, Smith said it appeared that the Subaru rolled over before coming to a rest on its wheels.

Smith said Alexander indicated that he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and that his Subaru was demolished.
