What would the Supreme Court say about same-sex marriage?

Following a federal circuit court ruling that overturned California’s ballot initiative banning same-sex marriage, the possibility that the Supreme Court might take up the issue has grown. Will the high court agree to hear an appeal of the California case? Is the court ready to issue a definitive ruling on this highly charged matter? What would that ruling be? Would a ruling — either banning or supporting same-sex marriage — prompt a push for a constitutional amendment?
