Can Maine grow a food economy?

The news that a business processing lobsters wants to purchase the former Bumble Bee sardine plant in Prospect Harbor suggests rural Maine may have the potential to develop a food-related niche. Canning plants were busy 100 years ago throughout the state,

processing vegetables that were shipped to markets in southern New England. Can some parts of the state again provide food – meats, vegetables, fruits, seafood – to markets in Maine or elsewhere? What products are possible, and where might they be located?
