GOULDSBORO, Maine — A mobile home on Route 1 was destroyed by fire Friday.
Local Fire Chief Robert Harmon said the tenant who was renting the trailer had left home around 8:30 a.m. Friday, but the fire wasn’t reported until four hours later. He said there were no reported injuries from the fire.
The mobile home was insured by its owner, Harmon said, but he is not sure whether the tenant had renters insurance to cover the loss of the mobile home’s contents.
“It’s a total loss,” Harmon said of the mobile home, which is located not far from the Steuben town line. “It appears to have started in the kitchen area.”
Harmon said firefighters had the fire under control around 2 p.m., 90 minutes after it was reported, and had it extinguished by about 3 p.m. He said he had not yet determined whether to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office for further investigation.
Firefighters from Gouldsboro, Hancock, Sorrento, Sullivan and Winter Harbor helped battle the flames. Harmon said only about 20 firefighters from all five towns responded. More manpower would have helped, he said.
“That’s always been one of our daytime [fire] issues,” Harmon said.
The Pine Tree Chapter of the Red Cross has been notified about the fire but the tenant may end up staying with family in the area, the fire chief said.
