ROCKLAND, Maine — Emily Benner of Rockland took home the 2010 Maine Sea Goddess title and $2,000 Wednesday night at the Maine Lobster Festival.
A crowd of about 1,000 abandoned the rides, games and food of the festival Wednesday night to watch 18 young women compete for the prize.
“I prepared for the worst, but I’m so happy,” Benner said onstage after the coronation. “I am going to try my best to represent this area. I know a lot of fishermen and they deserve representation,” she said.
Benner is a 2010 graduate of Rockland District High School. She plans to attend the University of New England and become a pharmacist.
Taking home two sashes Wednesday night was Meredith Joyce of Cushing. Joyce won both Miss Congeniality and was the runner-up, or crown princess, in the pageant. She is a 2010 graduate of Georges Valley High School and plans to study nursing at Husson University.
The event, set on the festival’s main stage Wednesday night, showed off 18 local ladies in deep-purple dresses, escorted by Navy and Coast Guard servicemen.
