Moments after the picture was taken, Gary Hamilton, 59, of Ellsworth drove a white box truck into the parking lot, around the cruiser, and at the moose at a high rate of speed in an attempt to scare away the animal, according to Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page.

Hamilton’s son, Scott Hamilton, 38, also of Ellsworth had charged the moose in a brown van a few minutes before, Page said. Both men were arrested on charges of using a motorized vehicle to kill, injure, or molest wild animals, according to police reports.

The charge applies to any attempt to harass wildlife in such a manner, Page said Wednesday. The men were each released later Tuesday on $500 bail.

The moose, which was not struck by either vehicle, fled after being charged by the white box truck and has not been reported in the area since, Page said.
