Gayton wins state title

Bangor Daily News

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Gayton Post of Lewiston capped off a remarkable run to its first American Legion baseball state title Sunday by outlasting Augusta 17-16 in the championship game at the Wainwright Complex.

The win advances Gayton (23-4), which needed a three-run ninth-inning rally in its play-in game just to qualify for the tournament, to the Northeast Regional tournament to be held Aug. 5-9 at Middletown, Conn.

In Sunday’s first game, Jordan Conant hit a pair of three-run homers and Charlie Partridge added another three-run blast to power Augusta to its fifth straight tournament victory, a 13-7 decision that forced the winner-take-all final.

Augusta (21-8) then moved out to a 13-7 lead in the top of the sixth of the championship game before Gayton scored five runs in the bottom of that inning to draw within one run.

The game was tied at 14-14 after eight innings before Augusta scored two runs in the top of the ninth.

But Gayton countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to clinch the first state championship for a Zone 3 (western Maine) team since New Auburn won it all in 1990.

The final game marked the fourth time in five state tournament victories, including the play-in game, that Gayton won in its final at-bat.

The Zone 3 runners-up also edged Libby-Mitchell of South Portland 10-9 in their play-in game as well as tipped Nova Seafood of Portland 8-7 and Bessey Motors of South Paris 9-8 to go along with a 22-13 win over Fayette-Staples of Saco in their tournament opener.
