MACHIAS, Maine — The Machias Historical Society and the Hannah Weston Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution are inviting the public to join in a special observation of the 233rd anniversary of the “Siege of Machias” by the British in August 1777.

The event will be held at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at the Machias Town Boat Landing at the Route 1 dike by Helen’s Restaurant.

At the commemoration, the story of the attack will be recounted and a service will be conducted to honor those early patriots and the Native Americans who helped turn back a large British fleet that came with orders to “Destroy the rebels at Machias.”

Stephen and Susan Sanfilippo, balladeers from Pembroke, will reintroduce in song a poem written in 1777 by Betsey Scott who witnessed part of the battle.

After the ceremonies members of the Machias Historical Society will gather for a Dutch treat supper at Helen’s Restaurant. Business will include their annual meeting, voting on bylaw changes and discussion of a history symposium scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, at the University of Maine at Machias.
