Floatplane crash on Moosehead kills aviation firm founder

By Judy Harrison, BDN Staff

ROCKWOOD, Maine — The founder of Telford Aviation Services was killed in a plane crash Sunday on Moosehead Lake.

Telford Allen II, 64, died when he attempted to land his floatplane about 2:20 p.m. in front of his home in Rockwood at the mouth of the Moose River off Route 6, state police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday.

Allen was flying back from Rangeley with his companion Natalie Holmes-Moody, 61, of Rockwood, when the crash occurred. She survived the crash and was taken to Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Holmes-Moody was listed in stable condition Sunday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

An investigator with the Federal Aviation Administration arrived at the crash site Sunday afternoon, according to McCausland. Initial reports from the scene, he said, indicated the wheels to the floatplane might have been down and caused the plane to flip over and end up upside down in the water.

Allen’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy, McCausland said.

Telford Allen founded Telford Aviation Services in 1982 in Waterville as a mom-and-pop charter flight company. It relocated to Bangor International Airport in the 1990s and evolved into the Telford Group, a regional and national leader in both airplane parts sales and maintenance.

The company was sold in 2009 to ACC Holding LLC of Milwaukee, Wis., several years after Allen turned the running of the business over to his sons, Telford Allen III and Travis Allen, according to a story previously published in the Bangor Daily News.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are responsible for investigating the crash. It often takes months before a final report determining the cause of a crash is issued.

The Maine Warden Service, the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police went to the accident scene according to McCausland.
