August Chewonki programs announced for boys, girls

WISCASSET, Maine — Chewonki has announced its programs for girls and boys for August:

• Adventures in Nature Day Camp, ages 6-10, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 16-20; aimed at the child who loves the outdoors, but is not yet ready for overnight summer camp. Campers explore the natural world through activities, outdoor games, live-animal presentations, outdoor cooking and nature crafts at Chewonki’s Center for Environmental Education in Wiscasset.

• Coastal Camping Adventure — ages 10-14, Aug. 16-20, at the Wiscasset facility. Campers live at shore-side campsites, sleep in tents and cook over an open fire. Each day, campers will be involved in a morning and afternoon activity including indoor ropes course, sea kayaking, canoeing, map and compass, trips to Reid State Park, visits to a farm and evening live-animal presentations.

• North Woods Adventure — ages 10-14, Aug. 16-20. This five-day trip to the region around Baxter State Park begins at the Big Eddy Campground on the shores of the West Branch of the Penobscot River in the shadow of Mount Katahdin. Day trips include visits to Chesuncook Lake, Ripogenus Gorge, the historic Boom House and Blueberry Ledges in Baxter State Park.

• Girls Saltwater Adventure — ages 8-11, Aug. 16-20. This five-day overnight program gives girls a chance to explore relationships with themselves, peers, mentors and the natural environment while gaining the skills to live and travel in the wilderness. Daily activities include canoeing, sea kayaking, map and compass, and team challenges, as well as plenty of time for games, swimming, arts and crafts and relaxing.
