PORTLAND, Maine — A 38-year-old man from Acton is facing up to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to federal charges he sold handguns to a convicted felon from Massachusetts.

Federal prosecutors say Randy Goodwin sold almost 100 handguns he had purchased in Maine between last September and January to Joseph Burns, of Lynn, Mass., who because of previous felony convictions is ineligible to possess firearms.

Prosecutors say Burns then distributed the guns throughout Massachusetts.

The Portland Press Herald says guns distributed by Burns were seized by police during arrests in Lynn.

Burns pleaded guilty last month.

In Massachusetts, private gun sales require a detailed report. Maine only requires proof of residency.
