Bangor Juniors capture state title

    ELLSWORTH, Maine — Nick Ashey and Brendan Moore each hit an inside-the-park homer and totaled three RBIs apiece to carry the Bangor all-stars by South Portland 13-6 for the Junior League state baseball title Tuesday.

Bangor advanced to the East Regional in Freehold, N.J., and will play its first game at 4 p.m. Aug. 8 against the winner of an Aug. 7 game between the tourney host and Maryland.

The regional tourney will begin with a banquet for teams and guests on Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. The opening ceremony and parade of teams will be held the next day at 9 a.m.

In Tuesday night’s game, Tyler Kenney chipped in with two singles and an RBI for Bangor and Justin Ireland had an RBI double. Ashey also tripled and Moore singled twice.

Joey Gleason had an RBI double for South Portland while Robert Graff and Ryan Gilboy each added RBI singles.

At Hampden, Teddy Laurita collected a home run, a double and a single to help propel Camden-Rockport by Bangor East.

Bangor East will play Cumberland-North Yarmouth in an elimination game today at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that game advances to Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. championship round against unbeaten Camden-Rockport.

Jack Gallagher tallied two singles and a double for Camden-Rockport. Kyle Crans doubled and singled while Kienan Brown chipped in with two singles.
Tyler Mallory-MacDonald hit a home run and a single to pace Bangor East. Ben Crichton added a home run while Ryan Moore singled twice and Dane Johnson doubled.

At Hampden, Will Bryant hit two home runs to spark Cumberland-North Yarmouth by Dirigo.

Calvin Soule and Zak Novak each hit a home run and a single for Cumberland-North Yarmouth. Caleb Normandeau doubled and singled while Sam Burgoyne added a double.

Sawyer Pinkham led Dirigo with two doubles while Tyler Bailey added a double and a single.

At Bar Harbor, Adam Geel tossed a three-hitter with no walks and 13 strikeouts as Calais shut out Waldo County.

The two teams will meet today at 5 p.m. to decide the state champion.
Jeremy Beers reached base on an error in the fourth inning and later scored the winning-run for Calais on an RBI single by Dylan Carter. Geel hit two singles while Billy Nicholas added a double.

Zack Beaudry hit a triple for Waldo County.

Scarborough 7, York 3

At Hermon, Jared Brooks pitched five innings, allowing no runs and just one hit with one walk and 14 strikeouts, to power Scarborough by York in the championship round.

The victory forced an if-necessary game between the two teams today at 5:30 p.m. for the title.

Brooks helped his own cause with a two-run home run in the fourth inning for Scarborough. Connor Kelly posted a triple, a single and an RBI while Zoltan Panyi added a double.

Chris Neilson paced York with an RBI double and a single. Jake McKenna chipped in with a double.
