Powerball drawing scores man $1 million

HERMON, Maine — A Hermon man who is a regular customer at C&K Variety won $1 million in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, the store’s owner confirmed Tuesday.

The winner’s name, however, is being withheld, owner Bob Duran said.

“I don’t know if he’d want me to release that,” Duran said.

The winning numbers were 20, 30, 38, 46 and 59, according to the Maine State Lottery’s website.

“This is the first time it’s happened in Hermon that I know of, and I’ve owned the store for 20 years,” Duran said.

According to Duran, the customer won Saturday’s Match 5 top prize by placing his $1 bet with extra play.

To win the Match 5 prize, a players must first match all five winning numbers drawn from a pool of 59 and then increase their winnings by adding the Power Play option, which allows them to multiply their winnings by 2, 3, 4 or 5 at a cost of $1 for each multiplier, according to the state lottery website.

For selling the winning ticket, the store received $10,000, or 1 percent of the total jackpot.

Asked what he planned to do with the windfall, Duran quipped, “Pay taxes.”

In a more serious vein, he said the money would be applied toward the cost of the small addition being built to accommodate restrooms for customers.
