SORRENTO, Maine — Police on Friday evening continued to search for a man and a dark green minivan in connection with a summer visitor’s report of a sexual assault earlier in the day.
The alleged victim told police that she had been walking at about 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Waukeag Avenue and Forest Street in Sorrento when the man jumped out of the minivan, displayed a handgun and forced her into the van where the assault took place.
Police said she described the man as being in his 30s, heavyset with brown or dirty-blond hair, with a stubble beard. He is between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet tall with blue-green eyes, according to Sgt. Troy Gardner of the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division.
Gardner said the man was wearing gray shorts, a green bandanna and yellow jacket. Earlier reports also indicated he was wearing a peach-colored T-shirt.
Police developed a composite drawing of the suspect and made it available Friday evening.
The alleged victim also told officers that her assailant told her that his name was Tom.
“He also said he was from Down East,” Gardner said. “We don’t know if he was trying to mislead her.”
Officials did not release the name of the victim. According to Gardner, the woman was taken to a local hospital and later released.
Officers spent much of the day searching Sorrento and surrounding towns in an effort to locate the vehicle and the suspect.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the dark green minivan in the area or who may have information about the incident to contact the Maine State Police in Orono at 800-432-7381.
