BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man was sentenced Tuesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center to three years in prison with all but nine months suspended for sexual abuse of a minor.

Eddie Monroe, 42, also was sentenced to four years of probation and will be required to register as a sex offender. The charges stemmed from Monroe’s relationship last year with a 15-year-old girl.

In a plea agreement with the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office, Monroe pleaded guilty to two of the four counts he was indicted on in September by the Penobscot County grand jury. The other two counts were dropped, according to Alice Clifford, the assistant district attorney who prosecuted Monroe.

Monroe and the teenager began a relationship last summer, according to court documents. They left the state together in July but police were able to locate her in Maryland using her cell phone records.

The defendant was located earlier this month in Coconut Creek, Fla., and returned to Maine a few days before sentencing, according to court documents. Coconut Creek is located about 15 miles north of Fort Lauderdale.

Monroe faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 for the Class C felonies.

Monroe will be able to serve his sentence at the Penobscot County Jail because his incarceration time is nine months or less. He would have had to serve his sentence at a Maine Department of Corrections prison had it been longer, Clifford said Wednesday.
