SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — This year’s Hospice Regatta of Maine drew large crowds, generous support, and was punctuated by the excitement this past weekend of the visit to MDI by President Obama and his family.

Organized by the Northeast Harbor Fleet, the Northeast Harbor Sailing School, the Southwest Harbor Fleet, and the MDI Community Sailing Center, the regatta races drew high numbers of participants. Approximately 50 Junior sailors participated in Friday’s Hospice Regatta races, 15 boats were entered in Friday’s adult class races, and another 15 participated in Saturday’s races. Approximately 45 poker players joined the “High Card for Hospice” navigational challenge, and 150 people gathered on the dock at Dysart’s Great Harbor Marina for the “Celebration of Hospice” lobster bake dinner Saturday evening, where awards were presented to winners of all the day’s races.

With entertainment provided by The Joyful Jazz band, abundant appetizers donated by local restaurants, and this weekend’s good weather, the pre-dinner party was full of lively energy. Many stories were told of sightings of the first family around MDI. One of the High Card for Hospice volunteers was treated to a close encounter with the Obamas when the first family came to the Claremont Hotel dock restaurant for lunch.

While the financial results of the Hospice Regatta are still being tabulated, it looks like the event is on target to bring in about the same level of support for Hospice of Hancock County as it has in recent years. “We feel very good about the commitment of our supporters to this event. In these economic times, it is so great to know our supporters throughout the community continue to join us in providing these free services to the individuals and families who need us,” said Jody Wolford-Tucker, Executive Director of Hospice of Hancock County. The Board, staff and volunteers of Hospice of Hancock County express their appreciation to all who helped make this year’s Hospice Regatta of Maine a success.
