BAR HARBOR, Maine — A Bangor man has been arrested and charged with arson in connection with a fire at an apartment in downtown Bar Harbor on Saturday evening.
Christopher Smith, 36, whose last known address was in Bangor, was arrested at the Bar Harbor police station early Sunday morning, according to Sgt. Joel Davis of the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office. He had been located at the home of a friend in Bar Harbor after a search by Bar Harbor police.
Smith is charged with starting the fire in an apartment at the Compass Harbor Apartments on Willow Street off lower Main Street on Saturday.
Details of the events leading up to the fire were not available Sunday, but Davis said it appeared the incident was sparked by a domestic situation. Smith knew the resident of the apartment, he said.
According to Assistant Bar Harbor Fire Chief Joey Kane, firefighters responded to a report of a fire at the apartment complex early Saturday evening. When they arrived at the scene, they found the remains of a fire on a rug.
“The subject had ignited a pile of debris and clothing and burned the rug area and filled the unit up with smoke,” Kane said. “It had pretty much burnt itself out.”
An unidentified person already had fled the scene, according to Kane, and firefighters made sure the fire was out and cleared the smoke from the apartment.
Smith was taken to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth where he remained in custody Sunday afternoon.
