Otten consultant admits to anti-LePage robocalls

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A consultant to former Republican gubernatorial candidate Les Otten has acknowledged paying for automated phone calls targeting a rival on the eve of Maine’s primary election.

Michael Dennehy says he didn’t consult Otten or his campaign manager about his message targeting Paul LePage’s stance on civil unions. Dennehy told the Kennebec Journal he didn’t realize he’d done anything wrong until he learned of Maine’s ethics commission investigation.

Otten called it a “complete rogue action.”

Dennehy is a former executive director of the New Hampshire Republican Party and assisted Arizona Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign.

LePage won his party’s gubernatorial nomination in last month’s primary.
