OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A 57-year-old Westbrook woman has died a day after rescuing one of her grandchildren from treacherous ocean waters and then getting caught up herself in a strong current.

Police told WMTW-TV that Anne Farley died Wednesday morning after being taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Police said lifeguards received a report Tuesday afternoon of six swimmers who were in distress in the waters off Old Orchard Beach.

Police said Farley rescued one of her grandchildren but was unconscious when she was retrieved from the water after strong currents kept her from getting out.
