Kidnapping charge dropped against man

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A 37-year-old Maine man has been released from jail and charges that he tried to abduct a 3-year-old boy last month in Old Orchard Beach have been dismissed.

Police now are trying to determine whether to file charges against the parents for filing a false police report.

Eric Auger was released from jail Monday.

Auger was arrested last month after the unnamed parents of the boy told police Auger grabbed the boy and tried to run away with him.

A police investigation has determined that Auger was near the Pine Grove Cabins and Vacancy Pub where the family was staying on June 22, but he did not try to abduct the child.

The family no longer is staying at the cabins.
