Mother Nature has extended the American Legion Zone 1 baseball regular season by at least one day.
Three games scheduled over the weekend, a doubleheader sending the Acadians of Blue Hill to the Steamboat Paddlers of Searsport on Saturday and a single game between Bangor and Hampden-Newport slated for Sunday, were postponed and rescheduled for Monday, according to Zone 1 commissioner Dave Paul.
The game between Bangor and Hampden-Newport has playoff ramifications.
Bangor (14-1) has clinched the No. 1 seed for the zone tournament that begins Thursday at the Winkin Complex on the campus of Husson University in Bangor, while Brewer (12-4) has clinched the second seed and final first-round bye for the six-team zone tournament despite dropping two of its three games over the weekend.
The Acadians, who defeated Brewer on Sunday, are 9-5 and have clinched the No. 3 seed regardless of how they fare in their doubleheader against the Steamboat Paddlers.
The Lincoln Lumber and Motor City of Orono also have secured playoff berths with their 8-8 records, but where those teams will be seeded won’t be determined until after Hampden-Newport’s game against Bangor is played.
Lincoln was idle over the weekend, while Motor City swept Penquis of Dover-Foxcroft to forge its way into the playoffs.
Hampden-Newport is 7-8 after splitting a doubleheader with Brewer on Saturday. Should Hampden defeat Bangor on Monday, the Riverdogs would join Lincoln and Motor City at 8-8 and clinch a zone playoff berth.
Should Hampden-Newport lose to the top-ranked Comrades in Monday’s 1 p.m. game at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, it would be 7-9 and forced into a playoff game against 7-9 Calais on Tuesday, with the winner of that contest rounding out the zone tournament field.
The Zone 1 tournament begins with two play-in games Thursday. The No. 4 and No. 5 seeds will square off at 4 p.m., followed by the 3-6 matchup at approximately 7 p.m.
The winners will advance to the four-team, double-elimination phase of the event that begins Friday, with Brewer facing the highest-seeded play-in survivor at 4 p.m. and Bangor meeting the other play-in winner at 7.
The zone tournament continues with three games Saturday and either one or two games on Sunday.
The Zone 1 champion earns a direct berth to the state American Legion tournament to be played at the Wainwright Complex in South Portland beginning Wednesday, July 28.
The Zone 1 runner-up will square off against the Zone 5 (York County) runner-up in a play-in game for the state tournament at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24, also in South Portland.
