Baldacci upbeat on economy

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci has an upbeat message about the economy in his weekly radio address.

Baldacci says July 4th weekend traffic entering the state on the turnpike was up almost 9 percent over last year. And Maine innkeepers report one of the best weekends in at least two years.

The governor says those are positive signs for tourism, which brings billions of dollars into the state and supports about 140,000 jobs.

The economy still has a long way to go before it fully recovers from the recession, but there’s been progress, according to Baldacci.

In the Republican response, state Rep. Andre Cushing of Hampden says people don’t like what they’re seeing in the health care legislation passed by Congress this spring. Of particular concern, he says, are taxes small businesses will have to pay.
